Dear Toward Freedom Reader,
Every day journalists are being laid off at news organizations around the world, further narrowing the media’s coverage of events. Major stories go untold, and many parts of the world are completely ignored. Although cyberspace has opened up opportunities for more "citizen journalists," reliable reporting is in increasingly short supply.
At Toward Freedom, we are committed to working with tested and trustworthy international journalists – from Rene Wadlow, who remembers Toward Freedom when it started back in the 50’s, to Tabitha Nderitu, who recently started reporting from Kenya – who are committed to TF’s mission: to advance movements for human rights, peace, justice and enlightenment, and to seek out and amplify the voices of those left out of the mainstream.
We are proud to support writers in many countries, people who bring you important stories that would otherwise not be told. We’ve asked some of them to say why they value Toward Freedom. If their words inspire you, please make a contribution to help continue their work:
"Having been a friend in the mid-1950s in Chicago of Toward Freedom founding editor Bill Lloyd and of Homer Jack whose report for TF of the 1955 Bandung meeting was one of the few in depth reports of what became the non-aligned movement, I have followed the evolution of the journal from print to the internet. It is one of the few US-based journals to take events in the world seriously, especially in those areas where the US government is not directly involved. Funds are always short for such independent analysis not tied to a specific NGO or university center. Its expansion, including a strong financial base, depends on all of us working together." – René Wadlow, France
"In today’s world, Toward Freedom’s longevity (it turns 57 this year, if I’m not mistaken) is as impressive as the breadth of its coverage and the depth of its commitment to social and ecological justice throughout the Americas, and globally." – Aziz Choudry, Canada
"As a freelance journalist and contributor to Toward Freedom since 2008, I have been beyond impressed by the professionalism and quality of work delivered by TF. Ben Dangl, my editor, has always been supportive, efficient and constructive in helping me develop well-written and researched stories." – Siena Anstis, Uganda
"Toward Freedom is an invaluable source of exclusive reporting and analysis from writers in the midst of struggles against oppression around the world. Without the support of TF, some of my own and other writers’ investigative articles wouldn’t have been possible." – Marie Trigona, Argentina
"Toward Freedom has made a huge difference in global news coverage. While the other outlets are satisfied with providing just the news, TF goes a step further by providing a rich background to their stories so that readers can grasp the context of the issues. The issues that TF covers have relevance to a global readership and a strenuous effort is made to proportionately cover the entire world." – Tabitha Nderitu, Kenya
"In the world of financial crisis and media conglomeration, every day there are fewer and fewer sources of factual hard-hitting progressive news and analysis. Toward Freedom is one of them, which for more than five decades has challenged the status quo on a daily basis to bring the public stories from around the world which you would never find anywhere else. As a reader and reporter for TF, I am donating the payment for my next article back to the organization. And I encourage you to do your part as well. Please make a donation today. There are so few outlets like TF and it can only continue with your help." – Mike Fox, Brazil
In order to maintain our global network of voices in this fast-changing time, we need your support. If you donate more than $30, you’ll receive a free gift hot off the presses: Greg Grandin’s new book Fordlandia: The Rise and Fall of Henry Ford's Forgotten Jungle City. This fascinating account of Ford’s failed attempt to create a capitalist utopia in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon offers insights into the economic beliefs that led to today’s global crisis.
Please support independent international reporting.
With warm greetings,
Robin Lloyd, President of the Board
