Click here to contribute to TF! “For the past half century, Toward Freedom has been and continues to be an indispensable and reliable source of information and analysis on independence, liberation, and decolonization movements world wide. And it is unique in reflecting and voicing the views of those struggling for self-determination and dignity.” - Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, Author, Historian and Professor Emeritus
Dear Readers:
A request from the archivist at the University of Chicago library for past copies of Toward Freedom reminded me that our last printed copy came out in the winter of 2005. For almost 5 years we have developed the online news source, TowardFreedom.com, that you have helped us support. Our network of award-winning reporters now spans the globe, and each week thousands of readers visit TF from Botswana to South Dakota. Amidst the proliferation of blogs and tweets, TF has maintained an integrity and a focus on people’s movements around the world that is hard to find elsewhere. We hope you will continue to support us.
Donate Online Our editor Ben Dangl has brought us to where we are now. Four years ago, fresh from a degree in writing from Bard College, fluent in Spanish, Ben took on the dual job of web designer and editor. Not content with sitting in front of a computer, Ben persuaded our board that he could successfully maintain the website from cyber cafes in Latin America, and took off with his partner April Howard to Bolivia where he lived for 9 months during a tumultuous time in its history. The result: a book on Bolivian politics and numerous articles not only by himself but by journalists he met and encouraged during his travels.
"Toward Freedom is indispensable reading for me; it is the home for thoughtful and well-informed analyses of world events, with the world being much, much more than a cipher for the anxieties of the US State Department. The journalists for this site try to channel those other energies, so rarely listened to on both sides of the Atlantic." - Vijay Prashad, Professor and author, most recently of, The Darker Nations: A People's History of the Third World”
The past 10 years has seen a transformation of politics and hope through out Latin America. As we support new voices, old power centers still vie for control. Obama’s ominous new military contract with the Uribe government in Colombia, and the continued fight for democracy following the coup in Honduras are indications of a renewed arms race in Latin America and the resurgence of the right in Central America. This spring we plan to keep a special focus on Colombia which will be holding pivotal national elections under a cloud of political scandals and indictments. "Toward Freedom is an extremely credible and progressive lifeline of stories and analysis on places like Latin America, and should be widely available. I am impressed by the depth and thoughtfulness of their work." - Tom Hayden, Activist and Author
Our coverage of Africa has increased as well, with reporters Tabitha Nderitu and John Lasker focusing on human rights in Kenya and resource conflicts in the Congo. In the coming year, we will also expand coverage of women’s issues. The UN is finally recognizing women’s rights as human rights, and, under pressure from women’s groups, is establishing the infrastructure to implement the resolution they passed 9 years ago, SCR 1325: Advancing women as Peacemakers. We will be keeping track of developments on that front as well. So, thank you for your past support. We rely on you to continue publishing. For us to continue charging into the future, we’re asking you to please donate to TF today.
Thank you,
