Dear Friends and Supporters of Toward Freedom,
Greetings from sunny Cuba, where I'm taking a leave of absence from election campaigns and war and serving as spring term resident manager for US students studying in Havana under an academic visa. It's been fascinating to be here at a time of change, and to look back from this vantage point at the global changes that TF has covered for 56 years. Recently, while other media have focused almost solely on coverage of the US presidential race, TF remains one of the few progressive media outlets in the US dedicated to international news. To expand our coverage even more, and maintain our cutting edge website, we need your support. Here in Cuba, I'm reminded of the importance of TF's international focus, and its legacy of advocating progressive change. My father Bill Lloyd, the founder of TF, taught me that that the epitome of goodness was the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). This group of nations acted as a mediating force and articulate voice for humanity during the Cold War. From 1975 to 1989, Cuba, one of the most activist nations of NAM, sent a total of 300,000 of its soldiers to fight in Angola. They went in response to a call from their black brothers fighting first for independence from Portugal, and later, to survive intervention from South Africa and CIA supported rebel forces. This spring Cubans marked the 20th anniversary of their victory in Angola. Their unity, according to Raul Castro, with Angolans and Namibians hastened the collapse of the hated apartheid regime, consolidated Angola's independence and contributed to the liberation of Namibia and Zimbabwe. These actions made Cuba a hero in the third world, but brought on the continuing hostility of the United States. Back in the 1960's and 1970's, TF was one of the few voices covering Africa consistently. We continue, now, as a website, to bring you under-reported stories from around the globe. This year, our group of reporters has grown to include Kenyan, Indian, Colombian and South African journalists that have provided investigative reports and analysis from their countries. Our website has expanded to include more video and radio coverage of international events and we ended 2007 strong with a presentation in Montpelier, VT from TF editor Ben Dangl on his recent trip to Bolivia. This May, we will host a talk by independent journalist Mark Engler. Upon returning to the US, I will be giving a presentation on current events in Cuba.
In order to bring you new voices, to expand our coverage, to create an alternative to 'the mainstream, and to maintain our cutting edge website, we need your support. If you donate $30 or more to our fund drive, we will send you a gift of Mark Engler’s book, How to Rule the World: The Coming Battle Over the Global Economy. Greg Grandin, author of Empire’s Workshop, says of Engler's book: "As the world readies to heave a collective sigh of relief upon George W. Bush's exit from the White House, How to Rule the World is a caution against complacency... An essential handbook not for the few who do rule the world but for the many who should." Please support independent media, donate to TF and help us reach our fund drive goal of $4,000. Thanks for your support, Robin Lloyd Publisher of Toward Freedom -
