The Resistance Dilemma in Latin America: Relationships Between Social Movements and States

The annual Left Forum is taking place in New York City at Pace University from March 18 – 20. Toward Freedom has organized the following panel, which is taking place on Sunday, March 20 from 12-1:50 in room E329.

Description:

A major dilemma facing social movements across Latin America is how to deal with the state — or avoid it — when working for social change. This Toward Freedom-organized Left Forum panel and discussion will look at this contemporary relationship in Honduras, Bolivia, Venezuela and Argentina. It will look at the debates surrounding the decision of The National People’s Resistance Front of Honduras leadership to participate in the electoral process, and will examine how this decision will affect the relationship between the resistance movement and the de facto government of Porfirio Lobo Sosa. It will discuss social movements in Bolivia and their current relationship with the Evo Morales government, particularly in areas related to the gas industry and indigenous issues. In Argentina, the discussion will focus on the relationship between social movements and the Nestor Kirchner government. The panel will also look at how people in the US can stand in solidarity with these movements.
